similar presentation sword, also by Ray and Montague,
and now in a Private Collection, was given by the East India
Company to Lt.Col. Barry Close, in recognition of his services
as Adjutant General to the Army in 1799. On this sword,
however, the scenes on the shell guard are landscapes, somewhat
cramped renderings of the engravings 'West View of Seringapatam
from the middle of the River' and the 'North View of Seringapatam',
puiblished in Robert Home's 'Select Views in Mysore Country',
1794. Baird's presentation sword, together with his gold
medal, are displayed in the Scottish
National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle. The collections
also include a number of objects associated with Tipu Sultan;

A sword (talwar) with
a Mysore blade, inscribed 'Hai' (for Haidar Ali), which
was presented by the Scotch Brigade to their Lt.Colonel,
General Islay Ferrier of Belsyde. Recent research has
proposed that this may have belonged to Tipu's father,
Haidar Ali, rather than to Tipu himself. . |
